What will the impact of 802.11 be going forward?

Phil Belanger

Phil Belanger is Founder and Chief Marketing Officer for Novarum, a consulting firm specializing in wireless broadband. He is known as "Mr. Wi-Fi" because of his instrumental role in creating and promoting the 802.11 standard for wireless LANs. Phil is the co-author of the medium access protocol that is the basis of the IEEE 802.11 MAC. He is one of the founders of the Wi-Fi Alliance and served as Chairman from its inception in 1999 through March of 2001. Phil has a background in software development and networking protocols. He moved into marketing and business over the past 15 years. Phil defined the market position and product requirements for wireless LANs with Xircom. With Aironet, he Chaired the Wi-Fi Alliance, created the Wi-Fi brand and propelled Wi-Fi's success with the acquisition of Aironet by Cisco. He helped create the business model for Wi-Fi service providers and hot spots with Wayport. He expanded Wi-Fi into municipal wireless networks with Vivato and BelAir.

Phil writes a blog on Municipal Wi-Fi at w2i.com and has authored a series of articles on the IEEE 802.11n wireless LAN standard at Wi-Fi Planet.
